Writing studies uses the case study at its primary method and methodology. This article offers a theoretical grounding about case study research and especially internet case study research. It argues that boundaries and spheres of influences are crucial to constructing an effective case study. It advocates for avoiding overstatement and overload when constructing internet case studies. It then discusses the ethics of case studies, focusing on searchability. It concludes by discussing the value of case studies in general.

Certificates in either hard or soft copies are common documents in our day-to-day activities. However, they are vulnerable to be tampered and inefficiencies exist in the current verification systems. Blockchain technology is considered a feasible solution to protect certificates from being forged and simplify the current verification systems. As an attempt to understand the potential of blockchain for digital certificates in a holistic view, this research aims to conduct a deep analysis of the benefits of blockchain for digital certificates using a multiple case study approach. A benefits analysis model is developed for mapping the benefits of an information system comprehensively and systematically covering benefits in technical, individual, organisational and societal dimensions. Although contextual variations exist, some common benefits are identified such as reduced costs of verification, improved decision making and planning, attracting new customers and supporting business growth. Lastly, future research opportunities in this research field are identified.

Purpose Grappling with the sweeping pandemic, the small hospitality business (SHB), smaller in scale and weaker in risk mitigation, has been seriously affected. The purpose of this study aims to supplement the unrepresented area of SHB in China from the digital perspective by drawing on instrumentalization theory (IT). Design/methodology/approach Based on two appropriate and detailed SHB cases, this paper adopted a qualitative approach to understand and conceptualize the focal issue. Findings This study identified the factors affecting SHB at operational, managerial and transformational levels amidst the crisis. It further developed a theoretical framework of the SHB rebound matrix, highlighting the importance of digitization and digitalization. Research limitations/implications The research theoretically confirmed that SHB is internally, externally and essentially restricted and developed a corresponding rebound matrix. It practically supports SHB's transformation by making recommendations to unleash the potential of digital business. Originality/value This study complements extant descriptive and atheoretical research by focusing on SHB's underlying digital nature through the lens of IT, providing an evidenced theoretical understanding of SHB's development amidst and after the pandemic.

The literature on digital innovation often relies on examples of
radical, even paradigm-changing novelties. In order to develop
such radical innovations, organizational separation of innovation
efforts has been advocated by many as an effective strategy. We
have conducted a longitudinal case study of a radical innovation
project at a born-digital company. The company established a
separate organization to develop radical innovation, but over
time, the innovation drifted from radical to incremental. Even keeping
the organization separate proved difficult. In explaining the
events in the case study, we follow the argument that new theories
of digital innovation can be developed with reference to the specific
properties of digital artefacts. We outline how properties like
editability and distributability may contribute to innovation drift, i.
e., the proclivity of radical innovation ambitions to gradually drift
towards more incremental realizations. Due to their nature, digital
artefacts can diffuse through the organization and, thus, pose a
challenge to the effectiveness of organizational separation as a
strategy for innovation. With this work, we contribute to the literature
on digital innovation by responding to calls for research on
new theories of digital innovation and the demand for greater
appreciation of digital materiality in organizing. We also challenge
the prevailing view of digital innovations as radical and aim to open
a debate on the possibility and considerations surrounding incremental
digital innovations.

Counterfeit products are an increasing issue across the luxury sector. Blockchain applications exhibit the potential to mitigate counterfeit risks and facilitate the growing secondary markets by enabling product authentication and digital proof of ownership. In this study, we adopt a qualitative multiple-case study design and conduct interviews with informants from four blockchain projects in the Swiss luxury watch industry. We identify the industry-specific drivers and barriers to blockchain adoption and specifically explore the challenges at the physical- digital interface. Beyond an in-depth description of the problems, our findings suggest two main data management hurdles related to the validity of input data and data synchronicity. The main challenge, however, is to establish an unequivocal link between the physical watch to its digital record on the blockchain. We present several invasive and non-invasive linking approaches and discuss their potential advantages and disadvantages. Further, we outline different areas for future research. Overall, our study addresses a timely issue of blockchain applications, contributing to the operations and supply chain management literature and supporting blockchain use case design in practice.

Purpose This study aims to analyse the level of digitalization in the cultural industry. More in detail, it aims to examine the determinants and effects of the digitalization level of museum organizations and the role played by the COVID-19 pandemic in the adoption of digital technologies.Design/methodology/approach In order to answer the research questions, this study uses the multiple case study methodology. In particular, three different museum organizations operating in the Apulian context were examined.Findings The findings show that the adoption of digital technologies derives from the desire to attract more visitors, reduce costs, improve the visitor experience and adapt to competitors. On the contrary, they show that the lack of funding represents a drag on the adoption of digital tools. In relation to the effects, the findings show financial advantages connected to an increase in revenues and a reduction in costs and non-financial benefits connected to an improvement of the intangibles. Finally, the results show that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital technologies.Originality/value This work enriches the current literature through the analysis of the drivers and effects of digitalization in the museum industry and through the focus on COVID-19. Furthermore, to the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that examines the level of digitalization of museum organizations in the Apulian context.

In investigating how to best support the learning of digital competences at school, it is paramount to take into account the concrete reality (cultural, technological, and institutional) that teachers face in their daily struggle to prepare students for the information society. Hence case studies are needed to inform us on the complex relationship between educational aims, technological tools and contextual features in fostering digital literacy. This contribution describes a project ran in a class of an Italian lower secondary school during a course on digital literacy. The project, realized in collaboration with the local children's library, consisted in the digitization of a text written in late XIX century. The results highlight various educational outcome of the activity. These include both technological progresses, such as improvement of students' digital competences and refinement of their skills in the use of a word processor, but also cultural and civic benefits, related to opportunities for reflection on the evolution of language and culture, and the sharing of the final product with a large community. The roots of this success are analyzed, in order to suggest general criteria for using digitization activities as an effective method in digital literacy education.

The purpose of this research paper is to develop a framework for implementing digital twin in the healthcare industry. Several literatures were reviewed for this purpose and references were taken to construct the proposed framework. After defining the proposed framework, case studies in the healthcare sector were taken to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposal. The case studies that were chosen are closest to the implementation of the digital twin concept. From the analysis, it is observed that most of the components in the proposed framework are implemented, ensuring the robustness and efficiency of the proposal, as per the data collected for validation.

Few industries have been as slow to adopt digital technologies as the cultural industry. It has lagged behind other sectors throughout every large-scale technological transformation or shift. Yet, for the most part, this has not been due to a lack of desire to modernize or stay up-to-date, but rather due to a chronic lack of funding and resources globally. Furthermore, the typical demographic for cultural organizations has, for the most part, consisted of those less predisposed to adopting and using technology. For many of the largest or most well-known cultural organizations, their reputation has provided a defense against potential falling footfall or revenues, allowing a deferment for technology adoption. Yet the inexorable march and global adoption of technology throughout all aspects of life has meant that the cultural industry is now lagging, and having to get up to speed at a rapid, and therefore costly, pace. On top of this, we have the added pressures of COVID-19, which have only heightened the critical need for the cultural industry to go digital, and adopt technology.
